Resume Tips That Get Interviews

Your resume has about 6 seconds to make an impression — and it has to pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) first.

1. Match keywords from the job posting

Read the job description carefully. Mirror key skills and requirements in your resume — naturally, not stuffed. ATS software scores resumes by keyword overlap.

2. Quantify your achievements

Replace vague bullets with numbers: "Increased sales 23% YoY" beats "Responsible for sales growth." Hiring managers remember metrics.

3. Keep formatting ATS-safe

  • Single column layout — no tables or text boxes
  • Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Georgia)
  • Save as PDF unless the employer requests .docx
  • No headers/footers with critical info (ATS may skip them)

4. Lead with a strong summary

Two to three lines at the top: your title, years of experience, top skills, and one standout achievement. Tailor this for each application.

5. Cut the fluff

One page for early career; two pages max for 10+ years. Remove outdated skills, irrelevant jobs from 15+ years ago, and "References available upon request."
